Saved map and location are different things.
The phone can obtain satellite location, but it needs map data to show streets and guide a route. When the area has already been downloaded in a compatible app, some of that information remains on the device. This does not transform all online features into offline features.
Before traveling, check if the map also covers the intermediate parts of the route, not just the destination. A small area may leave out a detour or the initial stretch. Planning reduces the chance of discovering the limitation when there is no connection.
Plan your trip while there's still internet access.
- Open Google Maps and look for the offline maps option in your profile menu. Follow the official step-by-step instructions for your device.
- Choose the required area, check the available space, and complete the download using a reliable connection.
- Check that the map remains up-to-date and that the entire relevant area has been saved.
- Before leaving, simulate checking the route with your mobile data turned off, in a safe place.
- Keep your address, landmark, and an alternative contact number written down separately.
How to interpret a test that didn't work
If the route doesn't appear, check area coverage, feature availability in the region, available space, and download completion. Don't assume the app saved a map just because you viewed it previously.
Consult the help section corresponding to your device's system. Menu names and steps may vary between versions. If you need a feature that doesn't work offline, plan how to get a connection or choose an alternative before your trip.
What remains the responsibility of the traveler?
A map does not confirm current road conditions, closures, or the safety of a location. Observe local signage and directions. Do not take risky detours simply because the screen suggests a route.
Avoid relying on a single device in isolated locations. Battery life, storage, and device malfunctions should also be considered in your planning. Adjust your route and phone only when you are stopped in a safe place.
Before putting it into practice
Do not use your cell phone while driving. The offline feature does not guarantee signal, route availability, or up-to-date information anywhere.

The feature depends on previously downloading the area in the app and on available space. Not all regions allow map downloads. Without an internet connection, there are limitations such as the absence of traffic information and routes for public transport, cycling, or walking, according to official help.
